  2.                                  CDSampler
  3.                                  =========
  4.  
  5. This application allows you to sample data directly from a standard audio CD
  6. in a similar way to reading data off a CDROM without the use of any of the
  7. normal audio digitising hardware.. It will transfer any section of a track
  8. from an audio CD to a hard disc, saving as raw data, a Microsoft WAVE file,
  9. an Acorn Replay file or an Armadeus file.
  10.  
  11. Requirements:
  12.  
  13. RISC OS 3.10 or greater.
  14. CDFS
  15. Supported CD-ROM drive (see below).
  16.  
  17. Note: Most CD-DA material is copyright. The only exception is discs
  18. specifically created for sampling from. You may be infringing copyright if
  19. you sample other discs. Especially if you distribute the results. You have
  20. been warned.
  21.  
  22.  
  23. To use:
  24. =======
  25.  
  26. Double-click on the CDSampler icon to run it. It consists of one window only
  27. and does not install on the icon bar.
  28.  
  29. The window is divided into 4 sections. When first run only 4 sections will be
  30. visible. Click on the toggle size button to show the fourth section (export).
  31.  
  32.  
  33. DRIVE SECTION
  34. -------------
  35.  
  36. This section shows
  37.  
  38.  - The drive number
  39.  - The drive manufacturer and type
  40.  
  41. To alter the drive then click on the arrow icons or type in a drive number
  42. (from 0-6 as show under the CD on the iconbar) and press RETURN.
  43.  
  44. The track number will be set back to 1 and the information shown updated.
  45.  
  46. TRACK SECTION
  47. -------------
  48.  
  49. This shows information about the current track.
  50.  
  51. To alter the track number, click on the arrow icons or type in a track number
  52. (from 1-99) and press RETURN.
  53.  
  54. The other three fields are updated to show the start time of the track on the
  55. disc and its length (both in minutes and seconds) and the track mode. If the
  56. mode is 'Data' then you will not be able to save from CDSampler - use CDFS
  57. instead!
  58.  
  59. CONTROL SECTION
  60. ---------------
  61.  
  62. This section gives you simple playback controls. Note this is not meant to be
  63. a replacement for !CDPlayer which should have been supplied on disc with your
  64. SCSI/CDFS upgrade or SLCD interface. It is merely there so you can find the
  65. section of audio you wish to copy onto your hard disc.
  66.  
  67. Note that you can use CDSampler and CDPlayer at the same time. The time
  68. display in each will upgrade in step with each other and either can be used
  69. to control playback. 
  70.  
  71. The controls are:-
  72.  - Stop
  73.  - Play selected area
  74.  - Toggle pause state
  75.  
  76. You can choose whether to play
  77.  - From start of current track to end of disc
  78.  - Current track
  79.  - Selected section of current track
  80.  
  81. There is also a time display which shows the current position relative to the
  82. start of the disc whilst the disc is playing.
  83.  
  84. EXPORT SECTION
  85. --------------
  86.  
  87. Clicking on the Toggle Size icon reveals the export section. From here you
  88. choose how much of a track you wish to transfer and the data format.
  89.  
  90.  - The In and Out fields specify the time in minutes, seconds and frames
  91. (75ths of a second) as an offset into the track. Either click on the arrows
  92. to adjust the time, type in a time and press RETURN or Click on the In or Out
  93. buttons to the left to set the time to the current position.
  94.  
  95.  - The file format field currently gives you the choice of
  96.  
  97.    - Raw data
  98.    - Microsoft WAVE
  99.    - Acorn Replay
  100.    - Armadeus
  101.  
  102. In the first three cases the data is stored as 44.1kHz 16 bit linear stereo
  103. audio, interleaved samples, little-endian byte order. Raw data means that no
  104. header is created, purely the audio data itself is stored.
  105.  
  106. The Armadeus format only supports 8 bit mono samples so these are created by
  107. mixing together the left and right channels and truncating the unused bits.
  108.  
  109. Click MENU over the format icon or SELECT on the popup icon to the right to
  110. change the format.
  111.  
  112.  - The filetype icon shows what kind of file will be saved. Drag this icon to a
  113. hard disc to start transferring data.
  114.  
  115.  - The name field underneath can be used to change the name by which the file
  116. will be saved.
  117.  
  118. MENU
  119. ====
  120.  
  121. There is a short menu attached to CDSampler. The entries are :-
  122.  
  123.  - Info. This leads to a standard application info box giving the version
  124. number and creation date. Please quote this information if reporting any
  125. problems.
  126.  
  127.  - Quit. This will remove the application from memory. It has the same effect
  128. as clicking on the close icon of the main window.
  129.  
  130. Problems
  131. ========
  132.  
  133. Note that this feature of the Sony drives doesn't seem to work 100% of the
  134. time. Occasionally the drive locks up and the only way to regain control is
  135. to reboot your machine. So we suggest that you ensure you have no unsaved
  136. data in any other applications running whilst you use CDSampler.
  137.  
  138. Another possible problem is with slower hard drives. If the data is not read
  139. from the CD fast enough it will give an error (although you won't see it) and
  140. CDSampler will retry the read. Normally this gives no problems however Sony
  141. advise that in these cases they cannot guarantee that the audio data will be
  142. read cleanly.
  143.  
  144. So if your saved file seems to have jumps or clicks in it then try saving to
  145. a faster hard drive or if all else fails to a RAM disc.
  146.  
  147. SCSI cards
  148. ==========
  149.  
  150. CDSampler has been tested with the following SCSI software. It is not
  151. guaranteed to work with earlier versions.
  152.  
  153. Acorn
  154. Cumana            1.17
  155. Morley            1.10
  156. Oak               1.36
  157. Atomwide Parallel 1.03
  158.  
  159. Any Acorn compliant SCSI card should work OK. Some poorly written software
  160. may give problems.
  161.  
  162. Supported CD-ROM drives
  163. =======================
  164.  
  165. These are the drives currently recognised (name as returned by *devices).
  166.  
  167.  - Sony CDU-561
  168.  - Sony CDU-8003A
  169.  - Toshiba XM-3401
  170.  - Toshiba XM-4101
  171.  - MediaVision CDR-93MV (requires firmware upgrade)
  172.  
  173. Many CD-ROM drives are sold under different names than their actual device
  174. name. Use *devices to find the real drive name. Also some drives are given
  175. small firmware changes and a different name but may still work with CDSampler
  176. if the Supported file is edited to recognise the drive.
  177.  
  178. The Sony 561 is available from Cumana as the 600 series and is fitted in the
  179. Acorn Multimedia Expansion Unit.
  180.  
  181. The Sony 8003A is sold as the Apple CD300.
  182.  
  183. The Toshiba drives are available from most other Acorn SCSI card
  184. manufacturers sometimes under their own names, sometimes not.
  185.  
  186. Other drives may be supported in the future if :-
  187.  
  188. 1) They do actually allow direct reading of audio tracks.
  189. 2) Information on how to do it or where to find this information can be
  190. located.
  191.  
  192. If you have a drive that you think may work even though the name isn't
  193. mentioned above (eg another variant on the Sony 561 under a different name)
  194. then you can edit the text file 'Supported' within the !CDSampler
  195. application. Double-click SELECT on !CDSampler whilst holding down the SHIFT
  196. key, then double-click on the file named 'Supported'. Remember to take a copy
  197. of the file as a mistake in editing may cause already supported drives to not
  198. be recognised.
  199.  
  200. CDSampler 1.09 and later support the CD_ReadAudio SWI. If your version of
  201. CDFS supports this it is automatically detected and used, otherwise the
  202. Supported file is consulted for the access method.
  203.  
  204. To use CD_ReadAudio you need CDFSdriver 2.21 or later and a version of the
  205. soft-loadable driver for your CDROM that supports the SWI. In the case
  206. of the Acorn/Cumana CD300 drive this means CDFSSoftSLCD version 1.05 or
  207. later. Contact Cumana for an upgrade if you don't have these versions.

  209. Data Format
